Why don’t we have these in San Francisco?

One of the not so good things about my first trip to Siggraph several years ago was the almost total absence of vegetarian friendly food in downtown LA. This year, the recent revitalization of the downtown area meant veggies were much easier to come by. Several days I grabbed lunch at this awesome convenience store just blocks from the convention center- Famima! Pocky and melon rolls? Check. Ume onigiri and soba noodle soup? Double check. Tempura donburi and steamed mushroom dumplings? Also check. The staff was super friendly and the prices were right for an animation student on a budget who still wished to get something healthier for lunch than the burgers and frightening pizza offered at the convention center’s food courts.

I am frankly surprised that one of these has not opened up in San Francisco. Maybe they fear the competition from the politically well connected chain of Quickly (corporate motto: we will put anything in a deep fryer) franchises?

Anyway, if you are ever in the LA area and need a quick hot lunch I suggest you check Famima out.
